Family recipes:  By Jessica Byler

Memories tied to food are a funny thing.  It amazes me how just the smell of a familiar meal or baked good can instantly bring back the feeling of childhood.  For as long as I can remember, my mom has made the world’s BEST (this isn’t biased, this is fact) Banana Chocolate Chip (BCC) muffins.  As a child, I can still remember helping her mix the ingredients as we stood in the kitchen of the old Victorian Bed & Breakfast my parents raised me in.  They were a staple of my childhood and still continue to be 31 years later in my own home.

My husband gives me a hard time about it, but the trick is waiting until the bananas are perfectly black and I know they’re just right for BCC muffin time.  My girls, ages 5 and 2 love getting involved in the process—smashing the bananas, stealing too many chocolate chips, and of course, devouring the end product.  One batch doesn’t last more than a day or two around here because you can hardly walk past them without grabbing one and gobbling it up.  When Mimi and Grandpa come to visit, it’s ALWAYS what my girls request for breakfast—and despite my best effort, there’s something about the way my mom makes them that’s just so much better than my own.

Does your family have a favorite recipe that has become your family staple?  We’d love to hear about it!  And join us soon for breakfast—Banana Chocolate Chip muffins were on the menu today and trust me, you don’t want to miss out!
